Dear Teachers, Parents and Students,
Ramadan is a special month of year in which Muslims around the world fast from sunrise to sunset. It is a time of gratitude, reflection and of giving to those less fortunate. During this month, the breaking of the fast is called Iftar and is an opportunity for families and friends to come together and be appreciative of our many blessings. According to this year’s lunar calendar, Ramadan is predicted to start on 6th June. To celebrate this occasion, the Islamic Department and GWA have prepared an Iftar at school on Wednesday 8th June from 6.30-8.30pm in the school cafeteria. Thanks to GWA and our generous parents, food and drinks (and sweets!) will be provided free of charge. In line with the values of the IB Learner Profile, packages of food will also be prepared and distributed to laborers around Dubai. We have organized a special program for the evening, which includes an array of international food, an Eid bazaar, Islamic songs and fun quizzes and games for the kids. If you would like to bring some of your nations traditional dishes to contribute, please do so on the night, which would be greatly appreciated. Prizes will be given for Most Delicious Dish and Best Decorated Dish, so bring your ‘A Game’. All Families are welcome and we look forward to seeing you. Please help us get prepared by filling in this google survey. How we Express OurselvesWe have started our new Unit of Inquiry ‘How we express ourselves’.
An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic. The Unit of Inquiry will focus on the Central Idea: Images communicate ideas and information that may create a response. We will be emphasizing some of the key concepts through this unit of inquiry, these being: Form (what is it like?) Function (how does it work?) Perspective (what are the points of view?) Our Lines of Inquiry are:
Over the next few weeks we will be doing many activities to familiarise ourselves with a variety of still and moving images and looking at how images communicate or inform. We will also be creative when interpreting and responding to images. Home Links There are many ways in which you can help at home to enrich your child’s learning experience. Here are just some ideas:
A little bit of help If you are a budding photographer or artist and would be willing to come and talk to the kids about the process or thought that goes behind an image/painting please let us know. |
