KG2 Sharing the Planet Curriculum Map |
Dear Parents,
This Thursday, between 8:25-8:50, the students will be doing a short clean-up of their local environment (i.e. school grounds and just beyond the gate). Feel free to join us as we inquire into the uses of our local environment and the impact we have upon it. Please ensure your child is at school in a timely manner on this day as we will all be leaving our classrooms promptly at 8:25. We hope to see you out there with us! :) Thanks, The KG2 Team As we try to develop our mud kitchen in the front playground, we are in desperate need of any old kitchen supplies please. This could be anything from muffin trays, metal bowls, saucepans, sieves and baking trays to spoons, spatulas, whisks and ice-cream scoops. Please ensure these are child friendly items- wood and metal are the best materials as they are not breakable or sharp.
Please bring any donations to your child's class teacher. Many thanks for your continued support, The KG2 Team Dear Parents,
On Thursday, February 25th, students are invited to dress up in an outfit that they would wear to explore Dubai. Have them think about a place that they would like to visit. This can be anywhere in Dubai. Where would they like to go? What would they wear to that place? Use your imagination! We can't give away anymore details, so please think creatively! Students will need to say where they are going and why they are wearing their chosen outfit/costume/clothing. Thanks, The KG2 Team Parenting with Love and Logic
The elementary counseling team will be hosting a parent workshop focusing on the Love and Logic approach on Wednesday, March 2nd at 8:30-10:00 in the Planetarium. In this parenting workshop, you will understand the process by which children grow through their mistakes and learn from the consequences of their choices. This interactive workshop will improve your parenting communication by setting firm limits in loving ways without the use of anger, lecture, threats or repeated warnings. Sign up for the Parenting with Love and Logic Workshop here. Due to the nature of the workshop, space is limited. By signing up, you are committing to attending on Wednesday, March 2nd in the Planetarium. We look forward to seeing you there. The Elementary Counseling Team Books for Breakfast
Next week is Parent Engagement week here at GWA. On Monday February 29th we will be having a books for breakfast session here in the class. We will be asking parents to come in for a healthy potluck breakfast. Parents are asked to bring in a breakfast item that can be shared with the class (and their parents) and then to stay and read with their child. Feel free to bring a favourite book, or to enjoy a book that we have here in the classroom. This will be a very informal get together but will be a quiet morning here in the classrooms. Parents are welcome from 8:15-8:50 before we head to our morning special. Class teachers will organize a sign-up with their class parent. Family Math Day On Wednesday March 2nd we will be having a Family Math Day from 11:30am-1:00pm. Students and their parents are invited to come and enjoy an afternoon of Math fun here in KG2! Each classroom will have a different activity going on, and students and their parents will rotate through each classroom in 15 minute blocks. The teachers are preparing a different activity in each room and students will work with their parents to engage in some Mathematical fun! We are looking forward to this activity and hope you can all join us! The stations will include: Patterning, shape construction, open provocations, mask making, measurement and number centers. Please join us for an exciting afternoon! Please feel free to contact your classroom teacher with any questions you might have. This week in KG2, we will be tuning in to our new unit of inquiry:
Sharing the Planet The Unit of Inquiry will focus on the Central Idea: People interact with and use the local environment in different ways. We will be emphasizing some of the key concepts through this unit of inquiry, these being Responsibility (what is our responsibility?) Causation (Why is it like it is?) and Function (How does it work?). Our lines of Inquiry are:
We will be investigating, discussing, exploring, examining all about our local environment: Desert, Beach, Ocean, City. What can we will find at these environments? How we can look after our local environment? What is our impact on these environments? Over the next few weeks we will be doing many concrete activities to familiarise ourselves with the local environment and how we can share and protect them. When we return from the break we will begin our new Unit of Inquiry, 'Sharing the Planet'. We will be looking into our local environments and how we use them.
Over the break take photos of your children and family using our local environments - this could be anywhere around Dubai and the UAE! Send them into your class teacher so we can discuss these in class. We have been practicing our measuring skills in the last few weeks by measuring items around the class using non-standard units such paperclips, hands and blocks.
Find some things to measure at home and in the garden using non-standard units. Some questions you could ask your child: How long is the object? Which object is the longest? Shortest? Can you find something that is shorter than _____? Can you find something that is longer than_____? Happy measuring!! |
