Happy 5th Birthday Sara!!
and Updated Schedule
I have posted a new schedule on the right that shows what Specials we have every day. There are still some changes being made to our daily activities and phonics will start in the coming weeks. Please make sure to check the schedule for information on Swim days, PE uniform and Library.
Home Folders and Home Reading
Home folders and home reading books will begin going home this week and next week (depending on student). There will be information on how to read wordless readers in the home folder. We will be working on this skill in class as well. Home folders and readers will be sent home every Sunday and should be returned to school every Thursday.
Becoming Readers
This week we will be talking about I PICK and Good Fit Books. Good Fit Books are books that meet the purpose of what children are learning to do and can be read independently with 99% accuracy. When we ask children to pick their own books, there should be a purpose to what they choose and why. We will be discussing what good fit books look like using the "I PICK" strategy.
I - I choose a book
P - Purpose - Why do I want to read it?
I - Interest - Does it interest me?
C - Comprehend - Am I understanding what I am reading?
K - Know - I know most of the words (this varies a bit in kindergarten when we talk about not needing to know all the words but being able to use multiple strategies to read and understand what we are reading)
We will also be talking about the 3 Ways to Read a Book (Read the words, Read and talk about the pictures, Retell the story)
We will be building our reading stamina and learning to become successful readers over the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
Math
In Math this week we will be continuing assessments and learning about patterns. I have already completed a pre-assessment on students (what they already know). We will be learning to create various types of patterns using hands on manipulatives.
Inquiry
We are continuing our investigation into "Who We Are". We are building relationships, understanding class essential agreements and learning about our responsibilities in our class and school community.
Class Parents
Thank you to Rebeca (Nicolo's mom) and Morgan (Sophie's mom) for volunteering to be our class parents this year.
Class Contact List
Thank you for your patience while I compile the class contact list. I will be sending an email copy of this to everyone in the next few days. Please let me know if you do not receive it by Monday, or if your information is incorrect.
